I Don't Know How to Be

I Don't Know How to Be · 1:1

Woman kneeling with her head bowed and hands in her long dark hair, wearing a dress that looks like melting pink frosting and gold leaf pooling on a pink and mint floor, in front of an ornate mint and pink striped doorway with painted roses. Signed Magpie.

A woman kneels on a pink and mint checkered floor with her head bowed and both hands buried in her long dark hair. Her dress looks poured rather than sewn, thick pink frosting and gold leaf melting off her shoulders and pooling around her in folds. Behind her stands an enormous carved doorway in candy stripes, mint scrollwork and painted roses, like the entrance to a dollhouse she cannot make herself walk through. You never see her face. The poem behind her lists everything she knows how to do, spill herself on the floor, dream impossible things, hold up the whole world, and ends 'But I don't know how to be what anybody seems to need of me without erasing all of the me that I've found.' This is the floor.
